By 2002 the Burmington churchyard was full.  This led to some morbid anxiety in the village as folk wondered where their future lay!  The problem was resolved by the current owner of Burmington Manor, Michael Macdonald, who kindly gave part of the field next to the existing burial site for consecration and use as an extended churchyard.

At that time Burmington was a small village with fewer than 100 residents and the average interment rate over the previous decade had been only 1 every 2 years.  The donated land was at a lower level than the old churchyard, separated from it by a steep unstable grassy bank and needed much preliminary grading before being in a condition that was fit for the purpose.

The project was seen as an opportunity to provide, not only a place for interment, but also a public facility for reflective recreation, a haven for wildlife which would enhance the appearance of the village.  Applications for a faculty and funding were submitted and eventually the project was supported by Awards for All, The Heart of England Community Foundation, Stratford on Avon District Council, Warwickshire County Council and by local subscription.

The consecration service was conducted by the Asst. Bishop of Warwick, the Rt Revd. David Evans on 24 April 2005. The official opening of the Memorial Ground took place on 31 March 2007 when the village supported a public sowing of the wildflower area.  Since then burials have taken place and many have enjoyed the peace and repose that the shady, seated area offers to villagers and visitors alike.
