ST MICHAEL

St   Michael at Whichford

The Church in the Doomsday book village of Whichford is well worth a visit.

The nearby woods and countless public footpaths invite many walkers to this part of the county and the church is a resting place after a long walk.

The church is open during daylight hours from 8:00am.  The Norman Knight pub on the village green serves meals and drinks.

The parish church dates back to Norman times.  Founded circa 1120-1150 by William de Mohun and Agnes his wife.  The church is now dedicated to St Michael but according to a will in 1484 the dedication at that time was to St Peter and St Paul.

In the chancel the tomb of John Merton dating from 1537 has an incised alabaster slab, considered one of two of the finest examples left in the country.

It shows the Rector in his Ecclesiastical robes.

The fine perpendicular south facing clerestory brings light into the nave, and wonderful architectural features.
